Definitions of Research & Scholarship

Definitions of Research and Scholarship used by the Research and Scholarship Committee when reviewing faculty grant proposals:

  • "The Code of Federal Regulations defines research as "...a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or to contribute to generalized knowledge."
  • "Scholarship" may be defined as any activity "of critical, systematic investigation in one or more fields and the submission of one's findings for criticism by professional peers and the public through published writings, lectures, or other modes of presentation."
